King Eider – 2020 first for Pembrokeshire

Somateria spectabilis – HWYADEN FWYTHBLU’R GOGLEDD – Vagrant.

First county record was of a first winter male at Little Haven / Goultrop Roads 10 Nov onwards, moving around the coast, off Howney Stone, St. Brides until the end of the year (DO et al).

Probably overwintered, but with a lack of observations due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions

The only previous Welsh records have come from Caernarfonshire & Meirionnydd in 1989 – 1990 and Aberaeron, then Ynyslas, Ceredigion 2017 – 2019.

Extracted from the Pembrokeshire Bird Reports and from the Scarce and rare birds in Wales 2020 (Welsh Birds Rarities Committee/Welsh Ornithological Society).
